Dodge Charger Hellcat Reigns as Top Target for Car Thieves

The latest report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals that the Charger Hellcat sedan has topped the charts as the most stolen vehicle in the U.S. for the years 2020-2022. The Highway Loss Data Institute found that theft claims for this beauty were 60 times higher than the average for all 2020-2022 models.

Thieves are eyeing not just the Hellcat version, but also the Hemi V-8 models. They’ve been snatching them up 20 times more than any other car! In fact, the Dodge Challenger coupe is also on their hit list and ranks fourth in the list of stolen cars.

The Dodge Charger and Challenger have become hot targets for thieves. The IIHS says theft claims for Charger Hellcats have skyrocketed, increasing from 18 per 1,000 insured vehicles to 25. Other top stolen vehicles include Ford and Ram pickups, and BMW, Infiniti, and Land Rover models. Hyundai and Kia have also seen an increase in thefts due to their lack of engine immobilizers exposed by an online trend.

According to the IIHS, EVs are often parked in well-lit and secure areas for charging, which makes them less appealing to thieves.

In fact, the dual-motor versions of the Tesla Model 3 have the lowest frequency of whole vehicle theft claims, followed by the Tesla Model Y. Other EVs like the single-motor Model 3 variants, Tesla Model S, Model X, and Nissan Leaf are also among the 20 least-stolen vehicles for 2020-2022.

And for those muscle car fans out there, don’t worry about EVs not having any kick – Dodge is reportedly working on an electric muscle car as the replacement for their gas-powered Charger and Challenger.
